WONMP operates under Charter by the Sovereign Medical Order of the Knights Hospitallers (SMOKH), charged with a wide range of responsibilities critical to the continued, long-standing mission of the Hospitallers. This responsibility includes certification and licensure of practitioners, evaluation and accreditation of schools and training programs and establishment of Auxiliary Healing Ministries throughout the world.

N
early one thousand years of history makes the original religious Order of St. John, one of the oldest charitable organizations in the world today. The symbol, the Maltese Cross, originated with the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who became known as the Knights Hospitallers because of their care of the sick and poor. These knights of centuries past were united by a pledge of compassion and courage.
As a cultural heritage, the Hospitallers practice clerical medicine, most often called monastic medicine, which developed during the middle ages and was provided as part of a religious duty. Virtually every monastery had an infirmary for the monks or nuns, and this led to provision being made for the care of laity and secular patients. Almost half of the hospitals in medieval Europe were directly affiliated with monasteries, priories of the Knights or other religious institutions and hospices.
Today the Sovereign Medical Order remains a Christian organization, is congressionally approved as a medical religious society in the Country of Ecuador, and is further recognized and has on-going relationships with many nations including the Vatican. While today’s Hospitaller is not expected to be a Monk, and while practitioners seeking credentialing are not required (but invited) to be a Hospitaller, we do remain close to our roots through credentialing practitioners to continue our cultural heritage, offering safe natural (Monastic) Medicine to those in need.
The Monastic Physician offers a full range of medical services incorporating the physical, mental and spiritual aspects, and encompassing good health and wellness, primary care, emergency medicine and minor surgery, depending on training, level of credential and in accordance with the legal structure governing medicine in the areas they serve.
Our membership includes practitioners and counselors from virtually every area of health care, from Massage Therapist to MD's and every profession in between - State licensed and traditional, and practitioners that offer services under certification and licensure by SMOKH do so in the U.S. as health and wellness services only, and exclusively through Private Expressive Association. This is a method of sharing information through membership, that may not otherwise be permissible to share with the general public. We find such relationship is necessary within the confines of the U.S. to protect the right of individuals to share in safe, natural medicine. For more information on the many factors surrounding the practice of natural medicine, we recommend attendance at one of our “legal conferences”.
And the decision of whether to offer your services as a scriptural ministry or as a secular business should be an "informed" decision, made carefully based on what you truly believe.
To help you understand this issue, consider the fact that the practice of mental health counseling is authorized both as a ministry (Church regulated) and as a business (State regulated) practice in U.S. States. This is true because while the States consider the right to offer counseling a secular privilege, requiring a State license, they also recognize the constitutional rights of religious practitioners to offer counseling under the auspices of the Church, and exempt from such State control. Natural Health Care is no different in this respect; Scripture clearly provides instruction to attend the trichotomy of man, or the mental, physical and spiritual aspects. It is the fact that the Church as a whole, has been seriously remiss in incorporating this important message of health in their teachings, and the fact that modern medicine attempts to separate the physical, mental and spiritual aspects, that underlies much of the failure of modern day medicine, and the reason that the multitudes are sick, tired, depressed and utterly lost.
So you have a choice.....depending on what you believe....
State licensed practitioners are responsible first and foremost to the State. As the "God" of secular, humanistic practices, the State licenses practitioners to offer services that are based on secular, humanistic principles. Ministerial licensed practitioners are similarly accountable to the religious body that awards the credentials, however they are ultimately responsible to the one true God, and services offered must be scripturally valid.
